How To Make Your Own Shabby Chic Shelves On A Budget
Sarah Williams, a Rainbow paint stockist and professional up-cycler, found this rectangular shelving unit in a car boot sale.
It was worn and battered – you might even say it already had a Shabby Chic appearance! But Sarah intended to give it a makeover anyway…
What Sarah Used To Upcycle Her Second Hand Shabby Chic Shelving Unit:
- Chalky White furniture paint
- A paint brush
- Screw-in hooks
Yup, that’s it!
How The Magic Happens…
Sarah had no initial plans for her shabby chic shelves but a trip to IKEA got her creative juices flowing… She knew she wanted to turn it into a utensil holder and spice rack for the kitchen.
She popped open the tin of our Chalky White furniture paint, gave it a quick stir and coated the entire shelving unit with just one coat.
After 30 minutes the paint was dry enough for Sarah to add the finishing touches – screw-in hooks to hang the utensils.
The transformation was incredible:

Who would’ve thought that, just an hour ago, it was a grubby, battered piece of furniture that had been bought at a boot sale?

- A mug holder
- Spice rack
- Utensil display
- Ornament display
