How To Create The Perfect Gift Using Ceramic Paint
It’s almost half term and Father’s Day is just around the corner, so what better time to kill two birds with one stone and spend some quality time with the children creating a fantastic Father’s Day gift?
So without further ado, we introduce the porcelain paint pen.
These pens can be used to create fantastic, personalised gifts that will become family treasures. Here’s how:
How To Create The Perfect Father’s Day Gift Using Ceramic Paint
First off, you’ll need a selection of items:
- Porcelain Paint Pen
- Item to be decorated – must be oven safe!
- An oven
- Some paper
- Some coloured pencils
First, Think About Your Ceramic Paint Design.
Depending on how old your children are, they will need varying levels of help with this.
If your child can just about put pen to paper, you might want to go through the first two steps yourself, writing something like ‘Happy Father’s Day From’ on it and then allowing your child to fill in the blank afterwards. There’s no need for younger children to draft their designs, just let them freestyle and enjoy the experience!
If they’re a bit older, get them to draft their design on some paper first. If you’re drawing on a plate, make sure you give them a circular template to ensure their design fits on the plate.
To get the right size, simply place your plate face down on some paper and draw around it in pencil.
For a mug, measure the outside with a tape measure or some string and then draw them a rectangular box than matches these measurements onto some paper with a ruler.
Make sure you only give them pencils at this stage so they can change their designs if needed. It’s also a good idea to give them the same colours you have in ceramic paint so that they don’t get upset when they can’t use these colours later!
Next, Draw On Your Porcelain!
Now that the design is finished, it’s time to get out the special porcelain pens.
These pens are great for kids because they are easier than using paint brushes and potentially messy paint. They’re also water-based and non-toxic, though they still shouldn’t be used without adult supervision.
Putting ceramic paint onto tableware and mugs can be tricky, even for adults, so make sure you have a spare mug or two to practise on.
It’s important to try not to smudge the paint as you’re drawing it on. To avoid this, think about where you’re going to hold the porcelain while you paint so that you can reduce the risk of rubbing off your design!
Then, Let Your Paint Dry
It will take about 10 minutes for your ceramic paint to dry before you can put it into the oven.
It’s Time For The Oven!
This part is for adults only.
While you wait for your design to dry, preheat your oven to 150c (or 302f).
Then, when the porcelain is dry and you are wearing suitable oven gloves, place your newly designed tablewear into the oven to allow the paint to fully stabilise.
After 30 minutes, remove from the oven with oven gloves and leave to cool down, allowing 24 hours for your artwork to become fully permanent and dishwasher safe.
